DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS
All three do the same job: draw the game at a lower resolution, then rebuild a full-resolution image. The differences are which cards can run them and how clean the rebuilt image looks. Below: the real render resolutions behind each mode, what your card supports, and the games that offer them.
What each mode really renders
Internal resolution before upscaling, using DLSS’s ratios. FSR’s match apart from Balanced, which renders a touch higher. XeSS 1.3 and later shift its mode names down a step, so its Quality renders lower than the row shown here.
| Mode | Share of pixels | On a 1080p screen | On a 1440p screen | On a 4K screen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | 44% | 1280×720 | 1707×960 | 2560×1440 |
| Balanced | 34% | 1116×628 | 1488×837 | 2233×1256 |
| Performance | 25% | 960×540 | 1280×720 | 1920×1080 |
| Ultra Performance | 11% | 640×360 | 853×480 | 1280×720 |
Upscaling helps most when the graphics card is what limits you. If the processor is the ceiling, a lower render resolution changes little — the bottleneck calculator shows which case you are in.
The three upscalers at a glance
NVIDIA DLSS
Needs an RTX card (20 series or newer). Runs on the card’s AI cores. Frame generation needs an RTX 40 series or newer.
17 confirmed gamesAMD FSR
FSR 1 to 3 run on almost any recent card from any maker. FSR 4, the machine-learning version, needs a recent Radeon card.
18 confirmed gamesIntel XeSS
Full version on Intel Arc; a lighter fallback runs on other makers’ cards.

Upscaling questions
Is DLSS or FSR better?
On an NVIDIA RTX card, DLSS usually gives the cleaner image, because it runs a trained model on the card’s own AI hardware. FSR’s strength is reach: it runs on NVIDIA, AMD and Intel cards alike, including older ones.
What does Quality mode actually render at?
Two-thirds of your output resolution on each axis. At 1440p that is 1707×960, at 4K it is 2560×1440 — which is why upscaling holds up so much better on a 4K screen than a 1080p one.
Is frame generation the same thing as upscaling?
No. Upscaling draws fewer pixels per frame and rebuilds the rest, which also makes the game respond faster. Frame generation inserts extra frames between real ones; motion looks smoother but input does not get quicker, so it works best when the base frame rate is already decent.
Why is a game I know has DLSS missing?
The list covers the 36 games whose features we have confirmed so far. Anything outside that set simply has not been checked yet.
